In 1985 I was 13 and bmx freestylers and skaters would gather on the brick plaza in front of the local library to ride the curb cuts and benches or they could be found riding the same driveway quarterpipes, a time when "the two subcultures could coexist in the same space and cross pollinate." I had the mullet, the neon OP surf shirts and the Vans but could never convince my folks to fork out the dough for a bike. I set my sights on the boards I saw the other kids riding at the time, the Santa Cruz Keith Meek "Slasher", the Vision Gator, the G&S Billy Ruff. I poured over issues of Thrasher, studying the pictures, the words, and absorbing the ads for Powell and Brand-X. By the summer of 1986 I talked my parents into my first pro board, a neon rainbow schematic graphic Vision Gator with pink everything. By the following year a lot of the die hard bikers had abandoned their Haros and GTs for Vision Psycho Sticks, jump ramps, and a steady soundtrack of "License to Ill". It is truly a gift to have lived in the time you epitomized as a time when that "If you saw a kid walking through the mall in a skate tee no matter what he looked like, what color he was, or how else he looked you stopped him and asked the two magic questions..." We still carry that vibe with us today. Thanks again.
Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17807956434333466277noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4205427062515246420.post-18644675042031653512013-02-07T17:59:42.277-08:002013-02-07T17:59:42.277-08:00yeah, he was a total todd. me, I would have been s...yeah, he was a total todd. me, I would have been stuart

Dadmiral Ackbarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00452689896620955137noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4205427062515246420.post-4088778167899032252013-02-07T17:16:33.822-08:002013-02-07T17:16:33.822-08:00By the way, when I was reading about "Bryan&q...By the way, when I was reading about "Bryan" I thought of "Todd" I think it was, on Beavis & Butthead. In my area, I can't say that BMX was ever a hit, although everybody had that style bike just because that's what was the popular style. Skating, however, was never even somewhat popular. At most, there were 5 skaters total at my school and all of them a couple years older than I. I'm guessing they were about your age. By the time I was their age, I was the only skater. Skating was conscious choice you made, that included other things (clothes & music, for example) that was completely outside the norms at a county school. This would be somewhat different, I'm guessing, at a city school. There was a point I was leading up to but I've lost it now! :) But anyway, I appreciate your thoughtfulness and look forward to reading more.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06138232191402295488noreply@blogger.com
